One Monthly Goal :: September 2018

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Not winter, but FALL! Our son started fourth grade this year and I may or not have shed a tear that it's his last first day at his wonderful school. He has been at the same school since pre-k. The staff is wonderful and we will miss them so much next year!

I have been slowly making quilts for his teachers and administrators over the last few years.

I made this quilt for the school and I'm honored that it hangs in the hallway.

I made this quilt for the school librarian when she retired.

I made this reversible I Spy/Checkers quilt for his pre-K teacher.

And when her baby was born, I made him this train quilt

I made his first grade teacher this polaroid quilt with the self-portraits drawn by each child in the class.

He's had the same teacher now for three years. Last spring I gifted her my version of Bonnie Hunter's "On Ringo Lake."

I've also gifted Tula Pink's Butterfly to our principal.

When his dance teacher brought home her first baby, I made this first year quilt, with a taggie that serves as a frame for monthly photos.

When another teacher had a baby girl, I made the same quilt in another colorway.

The next quilt is going to the school counselor. I chose the Labyrinth Walk quilt, which has been on my bucket list ever since I saw this trippy picture on Pinterest. He's floating!

I apologize profusely for not knowing who made this awesome quilt.
I think it's so fitting because she has helped our son so much figure out how to make sense of his mind and quirk, and has helped him to shine. I know that her favorite color is red, so made that the feature color. The top went together surprisingly quick.

I'm a little afraid to quilt it because I want to try something different. That's why I'm making it my One Monthly Goal.

Quilt #108: On Ringeis Lake

2017 was my year of social quilting. I joined a ton of quilt alongs, including Bonnie Hunter's annual mystery quilt, On Ringeis Lake

The very first quilt along I ever did was Bonnie's 2016 mystery quilt En Provence, which I called A team en Provence.

Bonnie is the queen of scrappy quilts. I now look forward to her annual mystery because I now I can make a (small) dent in my scrap bins and end up with something stunning.

I seem to use a lot of blues, teals, and purples, so this year I veered from Bonnie's color way.

Because it was a mystery quilt, I had no idea what the finished project would look like. I also had no idea to whom I would gift the quilt. As the weeks went along, I started thinking about my son's teacher. At D's school, teachers move up with the class, so Mrs. Ringeis was completing her second year with with D. I remembered how she met him when he was brand new to the school in preschool and joined an after school Lego job that she oversaw. The very first time I picked him up, she pulled me aside and said, "You know he's gifted, right?"

I don't talk too much about D's giftedness, in large part because Mrs. Ringeis was the catalyst for us getting him tested and finding resources to support his quirks and asynchronous development. She took him under his wing before she was his teacher, and since becoming his primary teacher he has matured and bloomed. She "gets" him and he adores her.

We have joked that whenever I make a quilt for someone at school, they leave. Fortunately, the trend has changed since I gave his principal her quilt:

With only one more year left with this amazing school, I knew I needed to start working on quilts for all the incredible people who have been such a huge part of D's life so far. So Ringo Lake became Ringeis Lake.

After the quilt was finished and D had slept with it--the final and most important step to "seal in the love"--I emailed the school to get permission to come by to deliver it.

When she saw D with the bag, she looked at me and said, "No, no, no! I have one more year!" I assured her we weren't going anywhere!

This is one of my favorite quilts for one of my favorite people. And I love that D helped with the label.

One Monthly Goal :: March 2018 Update

Spring break is a few hours old and we are already 2 states down the road. But, I'm happy to say that I did finish my One Monthly Goal this month and just before we left home, I took a picture of the finished top of my Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt, On Ringo Lake.

After all the social quilting I did last year, my goal this year is to finish all the quilts I started. I am just thrilled with the reveal of Bonnie's mystery quilt. Last year was my first year participating in her mystery quilt along. She has such great ideas for using my overflowing pins of scraps.

Bonnie used teal, brown, coral, and white in her version on On Ringo Lake, which was inspired by a trip to Minnesota.

As a native Minnesotan, I was delighted that my beautiful state provided her inspiration. Last year, I loved seeing the variation in colors used by other quilters. So this year, I chose my own colors. I used the watery blues for Minnesota's 10,000 lakes, gray and white for our long winters, and purple for the Minnesota Vikings. (SKOL!)

I was too late to join the completed quilt link up, but you can see other On Ringo Lake quilts here.

One Monthly Goal :: March 2018

March is really coming in like a lion here in Ohio. After temps in the 60s early this week, we woke up to about 4 inches of snow this morning. Perfect day for staying inside to quilt!

On my radar this month is my One Monthly Goal for Elm Street Quilts.  My overall goal for 2018 is to finish all the quilt alongs and social quilting projects I participated in last year. This month, my goal is to finish my On Ringo Lake mystery quilt by Bonnie Hunter.

Last year was my first year participating in Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt. Bonnie is a master of scrappy and since my scrap bins are overflowing, I now look forward to participating each year.

Last year's quilt was called En Provence. Here is my finished quilt.

Last year I followed Bonnie's color suggestions, but I loved seeing other participant's variations. This year I decided to venture on my own.

So hopefully this stack of blocks will be turned into a finished top by the end of the month!

On Ringo Lake: Clue 3

I've completed the third clue for Bonnie Hunter's On Ringo Lake mystery quilt. One of the things I really like about her mystery quilts is that she encourages participants to use their scraps.  I haven't used a lot of coral so I don't have any scraps in her suggested color. But since her inspiration this year is a lake in Minnesota, I swapped the coral for Minnesota Viking purple. Purple is my favorite color so I have a lot of scraps!

Fun fact: the 2018 Pantone color of the year is Ultra Violet.

It's my very favorite shade of purple! I guess I've been a trendsetter all these years!

Now it's back to finishing up some other projects while I wait for Friday and clue 4.

On Ringo Lake: Clue 2

Clue 2 of Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt was a gaggle of flying geese. It may be because I have multiple projects going on, but it feels like it is taking me longer to complete each clue this year. But at least I'm not dealing with a sliced off finger like I was a year ago when Bonnie revealed the second clue!

I'm also grateful I picked up a flying geese ruler from Creative Grids this year. Making geese four at a time is a real time saver and with the ruler, none of my geese go to waste.

I'm lovin gthe blue and teal together. This is going to be a beautiful quilt.
