Quilt #34: Train Tracks

My 2014 quilty trip down memory lane continues with a quick quilt I made for our local quilting ministry. If you regularly follow this blog, you may recognize this pattern, This is the second quilt I made with  Made By Rae's Storytime Squares Quilt. The first was Abrahm's Packers quilt. It's a really cute, quick pattern. I'm thinking I need to use it again soon.

The inspiration for this quilt was the train fabric I bought just before my son's passion shifted from trains to space. I noticed it went well with the alphabet print in my stash. From there, it was easy to pull other red and black prints.

I used the same quilting motif on this one as Abrahm's quilt, sans the football.

While it's been a pretty big task to go back and write about my earlier quilts, it's been super sweet to look back and find pictures of my little guy with each one. When I was out taking pictures of this quilt, some of the neighbor kids came over to inspect my work. I couldn't help but smile when I saw this gem.

I don't take a lot of photos of me with my quilts, but when I brought this quilt to my local group, my mom was visiting and came with me to meet my quilting friends. She snapped this picture of me.

I had in mind that this quilt would be part of our annual kindergartner collection, but the leaders asked if they could sell it at a craft show for a fundraiser. To be honest, I'm not sure where it ended up! Wherever it is, I hope it is being used and loved.

With that, I only have three 2014 quilts left to share! You can see a list of all the quilts I've made here (with links where available), and see photos of all my quilts here. To see what I'm currently working on, follow me at dejongdreamhouse on Instagram.

Quilt #11: Turning 20 in Red

In November 2013 I completed my first donated quilt. It was 8 months since I first started sewing my first rag quilt on a teeny Big Lots sewing machine. Our family started attending a new church. The first Sunday we visited, we learned about the quilting ministry, Piecemakers. The funny thing is, in the five years since, I've never seen it mentioned again. It's become a bit of a joke amongst the group, that we are a secret society!

The ladies in our group have all different styles and abilities. One person doesn't actually sew, but she cut up kits. This first quilt I made for the group was made from one of her kits. (I didn't actually have a quilt stash back then!) The pattern is called Turning 20.

It was also the first time I used polyester batting since that is what gets donated to our group. I am definitely not a fan.

My attempt at straight line quilting without lines, rulers, or tape.

I totally forgot about this sweet picture of my boy falling asleep next to the quilt top. Sigh...

I don't remember which organization received this quilt, but I hope it is being used and loved.

Quilt #106 :: Good Morning, Eileen

I am some catching up to do sharing my finished quilts! Today I'm sharing quilt #106, which I called Good Morning Eileen because it's made from the oops blocks when I made my Good Night Irene quilt.

My original idea for the Good Night Irene quilt was to make all scrappy blocks. But I decided that they were too busy together.

I kept the blues and replaced the turquoise blocks with ones that used the same two prints. Much better.
I didn't want to waste the turquoise blocks, so I alternated them with big blocks to come up with a new quilt. It was an easy finish and was perfect for the project for which they were made: gifts for a local kindergarten class.

I can't show the photo of the adorable boy who chose this quilt, but I can share a picture of my adorable boy with it.

Quilt #99 :: Good Night Irene

I'm a little behind with sharing my quilts which is why I'm posting a picture of quilt in the snow when it's 90 degrees outside! Today's quilt is my version of Good Night Irene. It's been on my to do queue for awhile because my scrap bins are overflowing.

I started out making both the blue blocks and the turquoise and gray pieces scrappy.

When I place the blocked on my design wall, I thought it looked a little busy so I put the turquoise and gray blocks in my Oops and Orphans pile.

I quilted with a big spiral. I was especially proud that I made this entire quilt out of stash. That may say something about the size of my stash...

This quilt was made for my local church ministry, Piecemakers. We make quilts for a variety of places, but this one went to one of my favorites, the kindergartners at a local school.

It is unusual to see the recipient of donated quilts, but in this case, the school invites us to the school to meet the kiddos and watch them pick out their quilts. I can't show the face of the happy little girl who picked this quilt, but I can show this one. She was so sweet. She gave me a big hug and told me blue is her favorite color. I hope it continues to bring her joy in the years to come.

One Monthly Goal :: January 2018 Update

Even though I didn't post my January One Monthly Goal in time for the Elm Street Quilt link up, I still posted my goal of finishing my Project Linus mystery quilt here on my blog.

I'm happy to report that my quilt is finished!

Not only did I finish my goal, but my quilt was selected as one of thirty to be eligible for a prize for the second part of the fundraiser. Starting this week, voters can make tax-deductable donations to Project Linus by voting for their favorite quilts. You can find more information here
