Quilt #123:: Beauty and Brains

I finally have a new finish to share! My sister Carisa had a new baby more than a year ago. While she was still pregnant I had the idea for this quilt, but I'm just finishing it now! Sorry, Millie!

My original idea was to make similar quilts for both Millie and her big sister, Molly. Molly received the 6th quilt I ever made, and it was time for a new one. Molly has my fellow lover of all things purple, but recently she has changed her allegiance to team teal. No worries, I'm putting my hope in Millie (thus, her quilt is mostly purple!)

Since I love Lori Holt's book, Spelling Bee, my thought was to have each girl's name front and center, with icons that represent them. When Millie was still in utero, I decided on beauty and brains to represent my prayer for her to pursue inner beauty and wisdom. Like so many girls of her age, Molly loves unicorns and mermaids. As I was looking for mermaid patterns, I found the pattern by CoopCrafts, and made Molly's Mermaid instead.

The inspiration for the crown came from Kimberly Jolly's pattern, Katherine, in her book, Fat Quarter Baby.

I resized the blocks, added two additional gemstones, and adjusted the size of the tall sections--I'm sure there's an actual name for those!

For the book section, I had fun looking for books that fit the brains part of the quilt.

I need I wanted a Bible storybook to reflect the wisdom of accepting and sharing God's love. I chose The Little Girls Bible Story Book for Mothers & Daughters.

When I saw the title Your Auntie Loves You, I had to included even though I haven't read the book because the title really is the point of the quilt, and part of emotional intelligence is knowing how to love and accept love.

In the same vein, I loved the sentiment of this book's title. Millie has her whole life ahead of her. Another aspect of intelligence is knowing oneself: strengths, weaknesses, and passions.

Finally, I choose two books that reflect a more traditional view of intelligence. As the mom to an aspiring rocket scientist, I laughed at these books because looking back, I think my son would have loved them. (And maybe I could use them to understand what he's talking about!!) Chris Ferrie has published a whole collection of these books, so it was hard to whittle down to just two, ABCs of Physics and Rocket Science for Babies. (Okay, fine, I picked them because the covers most closely matched my quilt colors!)

Fun fact, many moons ago, I wrote a children's book called "I Don't Wanna Go to Bed." It had a very limited print run and is so out of print it's not even available on Amazon anymore. Boo. I gifted a copy to Carisa after Molly was born.

I wrote the book in the middle of the night when D was about six months ago. It was the last bit of creative writing inspiration I ever had. A few months later I sustained my last brain injury--the one that took the last of my writing ability (as well as permanently messed up my vision and metabolism). But I am forever grateful for the gift of that night to have something written just for D.

So, no more books in my future, but quilts are more snuggly.

The label is attached and I'm almost ready to send it.

I made a slight error in judgment as I started the quilt and made the letters a little too big.

Thanks to the wisdom of the interwebs, I'm thinking I may make a bunting out of the oops letters.

***update***
I did whip up a bunting!

Quilts 42 & 42 :: Jan & Kitty's Amish Caravan

One of my goals for this year is to go back and write blog posts for all of the quilts that I've made, but not yet shared. I started quilting in 2013, and have made virtual trunk shows all of the quilts I've made in 201320142017, and 2018. (You can find a list of all 122 of my quilts, posted or not, here). I'm in the home stretch, with only 11 posts to go.

When I wrote my last throwback post about our guest room quilt, I mentioned that my incentive to finish that quilt was my in-law six-week visit from the Netherlands. I had in mind that I would finish the quilt for the guest room, and then when they arrived, take them to a fabric store to pick out fabric for their own quilt to bring home. I figured this was a good plan because my father-in-love is particular and with six weeks, I'd have plenty of time to finish.

As it turned out, when I brought up the idea, my father-in-law said not only did he want to pick out fabric, but he had an idea for the pattern and wanted to help make not one, but two!

Jan (pronounced "yawn"), like a lot of Europeans, likes lean lines and modern trends. He didn't want a busy quilt, which he thought was more American. His vision was to make quilt comforters for his and Kitty's new caravan (travel trailer). His first design was to have black quilts with stripes, and an appliqued caravan.
But after doing some sightseeing around here he decided we should make Amish carriages instead for just a little bit of America to remind them of his family in the US.

Because I am not fluent in Dutch and he is not fluent in English, it is difficult to have really significant conversations together. We visit them in the Netherlands about every other year, and they have come here about every four years. It's nice to have them on my turf, so to speak, because then I'm not battling a brain injury and jet lag and a second language. I feel like I have a chance to communicate myself. I really loved that he wanted to do this with me because it was a wonderful way to connect and deepen our relationship.

At first Kitty wanted to help, but once we got going, Jan shooed her away so it could be our thing. (As mom and cooks, Kitty and I have had more ways to connect). He was a quick and eager student.

The second top went together much faster than the first.

While Jan was piecing, I designed and printed the carriage with my Silhouette.

The applique was pretty taunting to Jan so I did that part.

I always like the underside of applique.

Jan did a great job on the quilting, and then I did the binding.

D did this part to roll his love in the quilts.

Of course, Jan wanted to test out the quilts as well.

I made and attached the label. Jan dictated what he wanted it to say...in English.

We had fun with the photo shoot. I love this picture because it shows his personality and fun-loving side.

When Jan and Kitty returned home, he sent me this picture of their caravan with its new quilts and pillows.

This was such a sweet memory for me. It meant a lot to me that Jan not only wanted one of my quilts, but that he wanted to join me in this activity I love so much. It is something I will always remember. It is no wonder my hubby is such a wonderful man, he had a fantastic role model.

One of my goals this year is to finish writing posts for each of my quilts. This quilt was finished in 2015. You can see what I'm currently working on by following me on Instagram at deJongDreamHouse.

Quilt #47 :: Sibling Neighborhood

The last quilt I shared was my niece's mermaid quilt. It reminded me that I still haven't shared the quilt I made for her mom, my sister, Carisa. I just started my 7th year of quilting, and there are several quilts from my third year of quilting (2015) that I never shared in a post. I'm not sure what was going on back then, but I vaguely recall that my brain was pretty fuzzy a lot of the time and it was easier to quilt that write about quilts. But this year, I'm going to catch up!

I often joke that my family tree is more of a family bush, because of a few divorces. One of (many) things I love about Carisa is that she strives to have a relationship with each of us in our own way. I don't live physically close to any of my siblings (or Niels' sister), so I have made each sibling's family a quilt.

The pattern I chose for Carisa's quilt is inspired by Welcome to the Neighborhood by the prolific and uber-talented Elizabeth Hartman. It's included in her book Modern Patchwork. Elizabeth made this version of her quilt for another of my favorite quilt designers, Violet Craft.

Quilt made by designer Elizabeth Hartman for Violet Craft.
I love the Eichler-inspired houses, and the design worked well with my idea of including a family photo and monogram with each sibling's house. I did have to adjust the block to include a door.

I printed photos of each family on Kona white fabric.

I didn't have a photo of my sister Liz and her husband with their fur baby, so I added Meryl by the front door.

With all the applique, I was able to see how teeny tiny my Pfaff was able to make the stitches. (Spoiler alert: VERY tiny!)

I used images of my house and Carisa's house for the label.

I often forget to take pictures of the back of my quilts, but I'm glad I remembered with this one.

 It was fun to tell D about his aunts and uncles and cousins when he looked at the finished quilt.

The best part of this quilt for me is that we were able to deliver it in person on our way to Russian Camp.  Liz came over and got her quilt, too.

It was so fun to see D and his cousin play together with the quilt.

When Carisa and family came to spend Thanksgiving with us the following year, they brought the quilt with them. The cousins had a sleepover and I about died from cute.

And with that, I have shared all of my sibling quilts! To recap:

For my brother Chris and his wife, Kelly, Divided in Football, United in Love.

For my brother John and his wife, Mary, Tool Tattoo.

For my brother Jake and his daughters, Sew It Forward for Jake.

For my sister Liz and her husband, Chris, Love Burds.

And for my sister-in-love, Ingrid, Floating Fireworks.
