Quilt #135 :: Hidden Gems of Menlo

In 2018, I was part of an online quilting bee hosted by Blossom Heart Quilts.  My month to be queen was December, which is always dangerous because quilters run out of steam at the end of the year. This was the second year in a row that I participated in a bee using the blocks on Blossom Heart Quilt's page. The first year, I made my Purple Abacus Quilt

This year I chose a more difficult, paper-pieced block called Hidden Gems.

By the time all my blocks came in, I was busy with other projects, both quilts and our big move to the Lake House. The blocks were placed together in a project bin as I awaited inspiration to finish.

That spark came in November when a volunteer from D's new school asked if I might have a quilt to contribute for the winter benefit auction. I didn't have a completed quilt because I usually give them away as soon as I finish one so I looked through my UFOs (unfinished objects). I knew it wouldn't take long to piece the blocks and finish it, and I was excited to see it completed. I had actually thought I might keep this one to myself, but my son's school is a good cause.

As expected, it didn't take long to finish piecing. I didn't need any sashing or borders because the blocks make a cool secondary pattern I didn't want to disrupt.

The main challenge I had was that my thumb was still bandaged from slicing it on a mandolin at Thanksgiving. It was tricky to pin the quilt, but Niels helped me out.

For the backing, I used two fun metallic prints I had been saving for a special occasion. I like the back as much as the front!

For the label, I used an element of the school logo.

I'm happy to report that the quilt had more than one bidder--my big fear! And the winner also won quilting lessons from me. I'm looking forward to creating another quilter to the craft.

Quilt #124 :: Purple Abacus

My 124th finish was more than a year in the making. In the fall of 2016, I decided to join an online quilting bee organized by Blossom Heart Quilts. I was placed in a group with 11 other quilters and we gave ourselves the name The Lovely Bee. Each one of us chose a month and a block. The block I chose is called Abacus

Here are some of the other blocks I made for the others when it was their turn to be Queen Bee.

I chose August when I was on vacation. It was pretty fun to come home to squishy mail from around the country. Our group decided to send a little something extra with each block. Here are a few of my favorites.

After I received all my blocks, life happened and I worked on other quilts.

In January, I made a list of all the UFOs I could think of as part of Quilting Jet Girl's Planning Party. I want to see how many I can finish this year. Hopefully putting them in a list to compare to next January will motivate me!

The final push for this quilt was the announcement of the day when our local group would deliver quilts to a full grade of kindergarters at a local school. It's one of my favorite days because there are few things better than watching a child be surprised with a gift of a quilt. Totally makes me day!

Once the blocks were put together, it was the perfect size for a baby quilt, but I wanted it a little bigger for a lap quilt.

For the quilting, I echoed along the white chevrons to make the purple abacus pop.

I finished the night before our distribution. Just in time to let D finish the most important step. Product testing and adding his love to the quilt.

Yesterday the quilt joined 50 others to be chosen by its new owner.

I can't share photos of the little learners or the sweet girl who chose my quilt, but let me assure you that she adorable and her big smile is the reason I quilt.

Social Quilting and the Lovely Bee Swarm

One of my goals this year has been to be social with my quilting. I have been looking for opportunities to connect with other quilters, participating in things like Quilts for Pulse and Quilts for Peace.

"49 Hearts" made for Quilts for Pulse
This quilt hangs at the Dallas Police Department in memory of the five officers lost on July 7, 2016. I made the two heart with stripes. Our neighbor and friend, who is an officer for our local country department donated the patches.
I've also met new quilty friends by participating in quilt alongs, where someone posts a pattern in steps and quilters from all over work on the same pattern together. Earlier this year, I finished Bonnie Hunter's En Provence Mystery quilt.

Locally, I made charity quilts with my church's quilting group. This quilt found a home in a Russian orphanage.

I haven't participated in any swaps yet. I always seem to hear about them too late. But, I did get into an online quilting bee this year sponsored by Blossom Heart Quilts. My "swarm" is the Lovely Bee Swarm. Here are the blocks I've made so far this year.

In addition to meeting a new group of quilters, it's been fun to dig into my stash and make blocks I might not have considered if not for this group.

In August, it's my turn to be the queen bee! I chose the Abacus block in deep purples and lavenders.

I'm so excited to receive happy mail when I get back from vacation. Before I left, I already received this block and goodies from one of my swarm members! So much pretty purple!!

Do you do any social quilting? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!
