Grandma's Kitchen, block #10: Recipe Box

Here we are at the 10th week of Pat Sloan's mystery quilt along, Grandma's Kitchen.

Block 10 is called Recipe Box.

Pat brought up a good point about recipe boxes. In this day and age, with Pinterest and the internet, recipes aren't kept in a box on a card written by hand or given by a friend. That's so true, in my own kitchen, I use Pinterest to keep new recipes, and keep favorites in binders in my command center to keep my favorites handy.

But I'm sentimental too. When Gramma died, I was given her recipe box.

I got a little choked up when I opened to find her famous lemon bar recipe right in front. I think she's used it a time or two.

You know Gramma was a true Minnesotan when a good number of the recipes were for wild rice dishes!

After making this block, I decided I needed to make some of Gramma's lemon bars. The recipe was a little trick to use, so I found that Baked by an Introvert had a recipe that was pretty close, so I used it to fill in the blanks.

D helped me with the final touches.

Today we will lemon bars and think of Gramma.

  2. That is so sweet that you have your grandma's recipe box. One of my grandmothers died well before I was born, and my other grandma didn't bake or cook so no recipe box. My mother has a recipe drawer that no one is allowed to go near. I hope one day I get to go through it. This is another fantastic block for the Pat Sloan mystery. Have a great weekend! Andrea

  3. What a lovely way to honor your grandmother. Yes, I do miss the passing of recipes carefully written on index cards. I confess I saved my favorite recipes from the ones handed down through the generations to add to recipe notebooks.

  4. Hi Jen,
What a lovely post about your grandmother. I have a similar recipe box that was my mom's, with lots of hand written recipe cards that are in the same condition as the lemon bar one. It's nice to think about sharing a lemon bar with her - I hope you enjoyed them. Oh - love your block, too! ~smile~ Roseanne

  5. Hi, I'm linking from Made By Marney. That recipe box reminds me of the recipes left to me from my mom. She always put handwritten comments about the recipe. Very nostalgic.

  6. I love seeing that recipe box! What a treasure. Sorry that the lemon bar recipe was a bit hard to read, but I'm oh so glad you found another recipe that was similar. Jen, thank you so much for sharing your memories of your grandma and for linking up to Wednesday Wait Loss.
