DIY Cooking Spray

As I mentioned in our past post, making earth-friendly choices in our home has been a gradual process. As a need arises or a product runs out, we research our options. More likely than not, we're learning that we can make a lot of household products ourselves. Pinterest has been a real help in this endeavor!

Some times I try to make things myself to save money. Sometimes it's because I found a recipe and want to experiment. And sometimes it's because I get a niggling feeling that there's got to be a healthier, safer version.

I found this recipe for DIY cooking spray from Nature's Nurture by way of Pinterest. I was vaguely aware that commercial cooking sprays aren't healthy, and even bought a Misto Olive Oil Sprayer, but  it clogged up shortly after I bought it.

Since this one was basically free (a dollar store spray bottle, water, and olive oil--all of which I already had), I was especially eager to try it.

Turns out it couldn't be an easier. All I did was mix 1 part olive oil with 3 parts water. My spray bottle is pretty small, so I used 1/3 cup oil and 1 cup water. The oil and water quickly separate, so make sure to give it a good shake before using. Also, you'll want to keep the bottle in a cool, dark place to to keep it from going bad.

Works like a charm!
