No more wasted heels!


You know how sometimes someone shares a tip with you and you think, "Duh. Why haven't I thought of that?" That's the inspiration behind this post. For years, YEARS, I would always toss the heels of my bread loaves. Even after I started getting getting green, those two sad end pieces would sit around in the bread bag long after the next loaf was started. 


So far, our 4YO has been a great eater with none of the picky tendencies that I'm sure he'll pick up when he starts school. But he started to ask why I never ate the heels of our bread (unless it was fresh from the oven, then I loved it!). I didn't have a good answer, so I started trying to be mindful about using it up. Usually by serving it to our son!

And then, several months ago, a houseguest was making sandwiches for her children and I watched her nonchalantly use up the heels by using this trick to fool her more picky eaters. And I said, "Duh. Why haven't I thought of that?"

Okay, this is so simply, I can't believe I'm even writing a post about it. Here goes: flip the heel over and slather your topping of choice on the heel. If you're making a classic PB & J, put the peanut butter on the heel as it will slather on easier. We are also partial to Nutella in our house, especially the homemade, sort of healthy kind I make

Cover the other piece of bread with jam. 

Flip the pieces together and voila! The heel is hidden!

Lunch is served...after adding some healthy fruits and veggies, of course!

    1. Thanks for returning the favor and stopping by. Sometimes I saved the heels for homemade bread crumbs, but we are big bread eaters so we had an over-abundance very quickly. Since I started using this trick though, I will have to remind myself to still save a few!

  4. Ha ha! I find more and more of those moments as I go. Why didn't I think of that idea or that recipe or that ingredient? I am a heel lover but also not supposed to have that many carbs so bread isn't around much. Good way to get rid of it. Thanks for sharing.

    1. I think my Dutch boys would revolt if I took away the bread! When I was a single, I kept my one lonely loaf in frig so I had a chance to get through it before it went bad. My sandwich-lovers go through two loaves a week!

  5. Yep, I do this all the time! My kids and husband never know the different. I, personally, know the difference and I guess subconsciously thing it's too dry. Weird, isn't it?
